Paul Andrews, Global Support & Business Development, DPA Microphones
Paul began his musical career as a student at the University of Denver, studying classical guitar under Ricardo Iznaola. He then made the transition into audio recording at A&M Records, and before joining the team at DPA stationed in Nashville, Paul was the Owner/Engineer of Bridge Recording Studios in Colorado. During his extensive career in audio recording, Andrews has worked with artists such as Sheryl Crow, Aerosmith, Boyz II Men, Dennis Chambers, Bill Evans and the CSU Symphony Orchestra and Big Band.
Come listen to Paul bang on drums and strum some chords on an electric guitar during this highly interactive, practical session on live microphone techniques. Heck, we might throw a Wurlizer in the mix too! Watch and learn… but more important - listen. Paul will record live instrument samples using a variety of different microphone types and placement techniques, and then playback the audio for all to hear. This session will focus on the usage of DPA microphones to get the exact sound you desire - right from the source - with little (or no) processing involved. Paul will demonstrate some differences and key considerations when choosing a microphone for a live environment, and the importance of proper microphone placement. He’ll also demonstrate how easy it is to mount DPA microphones on virtually any instrument or apparatus.
PS - This session will focus on live application but Paul’s background in studio recording and exposure to location sound and film over the many years shall not be forgotten - he’s no one-trick pony! Participants are encouraged to challenge Paul with any mic’ing scenario they’ve faced… we’re positive he’ll be able to offer a solid recommendation and maybe even share some contextual experience of his own as well.
